A collaboration has been established between the regions of Trento, Italy, Sandviken/Gävleborg, Sweden and Pays de Guéret, France, aiming at finding solutions to handle the ageing of the population, one of Europes’ greatest challenges. EU 27 has today about 15% of the population in the cohort of 60 years or more. Corresponding figures for Trento and Sandviken/Gävleborg: 20%, Pays de Guéret: 30%. The extreme demographic structure in Guéret probably puts the region in the European top ranking as the “oldest” region of all. The “elderly-boom” that comes from low fertility rates and longer life expectance will means a.a problems with declining workforce and increased costs for the public sector. In this collaboration, initiatives has been taken in developing ICT-based products and services for the elderly.
The Pays de Guéret Local Action Group has managed, in the european program LEADER+ framework, an action toward ICT usage developement and in particular home automation that aim to maintain dependant people at home. Similar actions has been taken in Trento as well as Sandviken/Gävleborg.
One of the goals of this action is to create a pilote centre in Guéret, a true prototype in Europe :
